RISD Wintersession Travel Courses 2019
LIMITED AVAILABILITY, Application opens on September 19th, 2018
All RISD students are invited to apply for Wintersession Travel Courses 2019. To apply for the Wintersession Travel course you selected, you must attend one of the course infosessions held on campus in September/early October.
RISD Global will hold a general infosession on Wednesday, September 19th at 5.30pm in the RISD Museum Auditorium, (Chase Center, Metcalf Auditorium) when all faculty will give a brief overview of their courses, and will provide their specific infosession dates.
After the general infosession, two course-specific infosessions will be held by each faculty between September 20th and October 2nd. During this infosessions, faculty will explain the application process, as well as their selection criteria. All infosession dates will be listed on the RISD Global website and promoted through posters on campus.
Once attended the infosession with the faculty, you are invited to apply via Slate for ONE travel course of your choice. The application via Slate will officially open on Wednesday, September 19th.
To participate in the course, you must be selected by the faculty. You will receive confirmation if you are accepted, waitlisted, or denied, as well as your scholarship assignments (if applicable) not later than October 8th, 2018. If you are selected for a Wintersession Travel Course, you will be required to make payment in full by Wednesday, October 17th. If the payment is not made by the deadline of October 17th, your place will be offered to a waitlisted student.
How to Apply for a Wintersession Travel Course
You can only apply for ONE Wintersession Travel Course, once you attended at least one of the course-specific infosessions lead by the faculty on RISD campus. Notifications of the times and dates of these sessions are posted on here the RISD Global website. The application process - Through Slate - will require you to upload the following documents:
1. A statement of purpose (max 500 words).
Please indicate why you are a strong candidate for this Wintersession Travel Course and the reason for your interest in this topic and working at this specific geographic and cultural context.
Communicate how you envision this learning experience benefiting the development of your art and design practice.
Speak to your ability to succeed within a studio environment, with site-specific resources and in a multidisciplinary context, beyond the reliance on particular equipment and/or materials.
Explain any past learning experience that might be connected to this specific travel course.
2. A selection of 10-15 images of your work that reflect your strongest, most recent major and non major-related, academic and/or personal work. Include descriptions of each image, the work’s title, medium, and dimensions.
Deadlines and payments
You will be informed of your acceptance in the course by October 9th, when you will also be notified of scholarship assignments (if applicable). To secure your place in the course, you will have to complete your registration and payment not later than October 17th. If you are waitlisted, you will be notified of any available spot between October 18th-24th, when registration closes.

September 20, 2018: Course-specific info sessions led by Faculty star
October 2nd, 2018: Course application + scholarship application close
October 8th, 2018: Notification of your acceptance/waitlist/rejection
October 9, 2018: Registration opens for accepted students
October 17, 2018: Payment deadline for accepted students
October 18, 2018: First waitlisted students are offered acceptance and required to pay within 48 hours
October 24, 2018: Registration closes
To apply for a Wintersession Travel Course, you must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 at the time of application. Students who are seeking exception to this academic policy should contact the Registrar at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
Wintersession Travel Courses are open to all RISD students. First year students must provide approval from the Dean of Experimental & Foundation Studies as part of their applications.
Brown students are also eligible to apply, but priority will be given to RISD students.
Per Student Financial Service requirements, students who plan to travel on school-sponsored trips must first pay their student account in full. Students with an account balance are ineligible for travel and may forfeit any funds already used to book travel arrangements. Need-based scholarships are available for RISD students for Wintersession Travel Courses 2019. The scholarships may cover part or the entire course tuition. RISD scholarships are awarded based in part on a combination of financial need and academic merit. Because scholarship funds are limited, not all applicants will receive funding.
The scholarship application will open on September 19th and will close by October 2nd. Students will be notified not later than October 8th.
All course tuitions include shared accommodation, studio space, local transportation, field trips, tours, guides and lectures, museums and/or site visits fees, some group lunch/dinners, Health and Travel Insurance through GeoBlue. In specific cases, additional details (such as airfare, materials, additional meals, etc) might be included. Please review the specific course description.
Passport and visa
All participants must have a valid passport expiring at least six months after the final day of the course. Participants are responsible for maintaining their own legal status and applying for their Visa (if requested). Upon request, RISD Global will provide participants with a registration letter in support of their Visa process (Note: International students must set up an appointment with OISS and will receive the letter from OISS). .
RISD reserves the right to cancel a course due to low enrollment. Final course confirmation will be sent to registered students by late October, 2018. Participants should not book airline tickets or make travel arrangements prior to the course confirmation. Any cost incurred in such situation is on the participant’s responsibility. In case of cancellation, all payments will be refunded in full.
