Sonia Khurana Global Dialogue at RISD Global

Thanks to the wonderful connection of Professor Vazira Zamindar of Brown University—on Tuesday, May 10, RISD Global and the RISD Museum will host the Delhi-based, contemporary visual media artist, Sonia Khurana for a talk on her work. The artist talk, which is part of an informal series of global dialogues, will take place at RISD Global (3rd floor of Prov/Wash) on the evening of Tuesday, May 10 at 6:30PM. Please note, as space is limited rsvp to attend at gpp@risd.edu, seats will be reserved on an rsvp basis. Here is more information on Sonia’s work and practice:

Sonia Khurana works primarily with lens-based media; photo, video, and the moving image, performance, text, drawing, sound, music, voice, and installation. Her art practice attempts to draw critically on references to the psychosocial domain, cultural and gendered identity, and constant negotiations between body and language, the self and the world. Working with a discourse of power that is deliberately tangential, she structures the self through states of strangeness, alienation, displacement and embodiment. Through these deliberately poetic intimations, she tries to persistently explore and re-define the space of the political.

Sonia studied art in London at the Royal College of Art, where she completed her Masters in 1999, and earlier in Delhi, at the Delhi College of art. In 2002, Sonia did a two-year Residency Programme for practice-based research at the Rijksakademie VanBeeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Participation in significant museum shows around the world and biennales, include elles@Centre Pompidou (2009/2010), in the Global Feminisms exhibition in Brooklyn (2007), the Aichi triennale [2010], the Busan biennale[ 2004] and the Gwangju biennale [2008] and in the seminal exhibition west heavens, in Shanghai [2010] among many other international museum exhibitions. [listed under group shows]. Her single channel video Bird, produced in 1999 places her significantly within the feminist discourse, as well as among the emerging generation of South Asian artists working with digital media.

Sonia is currently visiting faculty at the Shiv Nadar University, fine arts Department Delhi. This summer her teaching assignments include University of New Castle school of Art and design, U.K., Kala Bhawan, Shantinketan, Bengal [Jan 2016], Drik/Pathshala, Dhaka, the Shiv Nadar University, New Delhi, [ feb, 2016], the Whitechapel Gallery, London University of Heidelberg, Germany, University of Texas, Austin. She is based in New Delhi.
