Germany: Advanced Studio - Crystal Clear
6 credits (D-24ST-03)
Aug. 25-31: Germany
As students you are familiar with the design process, solving problems and evolving an idea from initial concept to finalized design. In the reality of manufacturing, the design phase is only the first step of many. All steps are key in transforming an idea into an actualized product.
In this tabletop course sponsored by German crystal company Nachtmann, you will have an opportunity to visit glass factories in Germany and Austria to understand and learn directly from the manufacturers. With your understanding of production capabilities and limitations, you will design a collection of modern glassware/giftware for Nachtmann. You will be working closely with Nachtmann’s design directors throughout the semester, and your designs have a chance to be considered for production by Nachtmann.
Students will work hands on with sketching and modeling with accessible material (partial funding) such as paper, clay, foam, wood and metal for investigation of forms. We will also research and identify the market for modern and sensible design solutions. In addition to physical models, final deliverables include realistic 3D renderings and 3D printing.
Permission of Instructor required.
